Trevi fountain
Trevi fountain
It is the largest of Rome's famous fountains. Built of travertine and Carrara marble, it was designed by Nicola Salvi and Giuseppe Pannini in 1732. It is fed by an aqueduct that has been active for more than 2,000 years and is almost 20 km long.
The theme of the entire composition is the sea. The setting is dominated by a large cliff in the center of which stands the large statue of Oceano. The Trevi Fountain is famous for the tradition of coin tossing. An ancient custom of throwing obols or small gifts to ingratiate oneself with local deities.
The Trevi Fountain has also been featured in many films shot in the capital, including Federico Fellini's La Dolce Vita.
