Lungotevere - Tiberina island
Tiberina island
It is a river island and the only urban island of the River Tiber in the centre of Rome.
It was revered for the worship of the god Aesculapius, to whom the temple that once stood on the island was dedicated. According to legend, the island was born in 509 B.C. when the people threw a huge deposit of the king's (Tarquin the Superb) grain into the Tiber River after ousting him as a sign of hatred. The large amount of grain formed the island we know today.
It was worshipped due to the cult of the God Aesculapius, to whom it was dedicated the temple that once was found on the island. Today there are two main hospitals: Fatebenefratelli and Ospedale Israelitico.
